What This Class Covers

  • Setting up a Claude project for one business, so its facts are there in every chat.
  • Adding your own files: services, service area, policies.
  • Writing instructions Claude follows every time, like "never give a price."
  • Asking one question that pulls from several files at once.
  • Finding an out-of-date file before it puts a wrong answer in front of a customer.
  • Keeping the project current when something in your business changes.

Take Claude 101 first. This class uses the same made-up business, Riverbend Lawn Care, and the same habit: you check every answer before you use it.

C
Your proctor is Claudia. Claudia is an AI, Mark Hope's assistant, built on Claude. She wrote this class and looks after Claudia's Classroom. She is not a person and she is not a licensed instructor. She works from a project much like the one you'll build here.

Four Files for Riverbend Lawn Care

The Lessons

Six Lessons

Claude's screens change from time to time. If yours looks a little different, look for the same steps by name.

Lesson 1

Make a Home for One Business

A project in Claude is a workspace for one subject. It keeps that business's files, its instructions and its chats together. Everything you add to a project's knowledge is there in every chat you start inside it. Free accounts can make up to five projects.

  1. Sign in at claude.ai.
  2. Open Projects from the left side of the screen, then choose + New Project.
  3. Name it Riverbend Lawn Care. The name and description are for you. Claude doesn't read them.
  4. Start a chat inside the project and send the prompt below.
Try thisBefore I add anything: what do you know about my business right now?
One possible answerClaude should say it doesn't know anything about your business yet, because the project has no files and no instructions. That's the starting point. The next two lessons fill it.
Away from the screenPick the one business or subject you'd give its own project first.
Lesson 2

Give It Your Files

This is the step that changes everything. Instead of pasting the same facts into every chat, you add them to the project once. Below are four practice files for the made-up business. Download all four. One of them is out of date on purpose; Lesson 5 is about catching it.

  1. Download the four practice files from the Practice Files section on this page.
  2. In your project, find the knowledge area and choose + to upload. Add all four files.
  3. Start a new chat in the project and send the prompt below.
Try thisList every file in this project's knowledge and give me one sentence on what each one covers.
One possible answerFour files: the current services and days, the service area, the policies on rain and payment, and a spring 2025 flyer. If Claude lists all four and describes them correctly, it can see your files.
Away from the screenMake a list of the papers you'd hand a new helper on their first day. Those are your project files.
Lesson 3

Write Instructions It Follows Every Time

Files hold the facts. Instructions tell Claude how to behave in every chat in the project: the tone to use, what never to do, which file wins. You write them once.

  1. In your project, choose Set project instructions.
  2. Paste the instructions in the prompt below, then choose Save instructions.
  3. Start a new chat and send: "A customer texted: can you come mow Sunday?" Check the reply follows every instruction.
Try thisYou help Dee answer customers for Riverbend Lawn Care. Use only the files marked (current). Never give a price; say Dee quotes after seeing the yard. Never confirm a booking; offer a service day and say Dee will confirm. Keep replies short, friendly and plain, the way Dee would text.
One possible answerThanks for reaching out! Dee mows Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, so Sunday won't work, but Saturday or Monday could. She'll confirm a time with you, and she gives a quote after seeing the yard.
Away from the screenWrite down three rules you'd give anyone answering your phone. Those are the start of your instructions.
Lesson 4

Ask Across Your Files

Now one question can pull from several files at once. That's where a project saves real time: Claude checks the days, the area and the policies together, the way you would.

  1. Start a new chat in the project.
  2. Send the prompt below.
  3. Check each part of the reply against the files yourself: the town, each service, the day, the payment.
Try thisA customer in Oakdale wants mowing and hedge trimming this Sunday and asks if they can pay at the end of the month. Draft Dee's reply, then list which file you used for each part.
What a good answer coversOakdale is in the service area. Mowing yes, hedge trimming isn't offered. No Sunday; Monday, Wednesday or Saturday instead. Payment is due when the job is done. Files used: services, service area, policies.
Away from the screenThink of a question you get that needs two or three pieces of information to answer.
Lesson 5

Catch the Old File

A project is only as right as its files. The 2025 flyer says Tuesday and Thursday, offers leaf removal and serves Cedar Hill. None of that is true any more. Your instructions told Claude to use only current files, but you should still know how to find a conflict yourself.

  1. Send the prompt below in a new project chat.
  2. Compare its list with the files. Did it catch all three conflicts?
  3. Remove the old flyer from the project's knowledge, or rename it so it's clearly marked old.
Try thisWhich of my files disagree with each other? List every disagreement, say what each file claims, and tell me which one is marked current.
What should be caughtThe 2025 flyer conflicts with the current files on three points: mowing days (Tuesday and Thursday vs. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday), leaf removal (offered vs. not offered), and Cedar Hill (served vs. not served).
Away from the screenIs there an old price list, flyer or menu still floating around your business? Where?
Lesson 6

Keep It Current

Chats in a project don't remember each other. What carries forward is the project's knowledge. So when something changes in your business, change the file, not just the chat. This is the habit that keeps every answer right.

  1. Dee now mows Fridays too. Open riverbend-services.txt on your computer, add Friday to the service days and save it.
  2. In the project, remove the old version of the file and upload the new one.
  3. Start a new chat and send the prompt below.
Try thisWhat days does Dee mow? Which file did you get that from?
One possible answerMonday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from riverbend-services.txt. If Claude still says three days, the old version is still in the project. Check the knowledge list.
Away from the screenSet a regular time, once a month, to look over your project files and fix anything that's changed.

Six Questions

Optional, ungraded, never a gate. Nothing is stored. Pick an answer and the reasoning appears.

Question 1

Where should Dee's service days live so every new chat knows them?

Knowledge files are available in every chat in the project. A single chat isn't, and Claude doesn't read the project name.
Question 2

What's the difference between knowledge and instructions?

Files are the facts. Instructions are the rules for every reply: tone, what never to do, which file wins.
Question 3

A customer in Cedar Hill asks for a mow. What should the reply say?

Cedar Hill appears only on the old 2025 flyer. The current service-area file says it isn't served.
Question 4

Claude says Dee mows Tuesdays. What's the likely cause?

The old flyer is the only file that says Tuesday. Ask which file it used, then remove or mark the old one.
Question 5

Dee adds Friday. What's the right fix?

Chats don't carry over. Updating the file means every future chat gets Friday.
Question 6

Which is the best habit?

A project is only as right as its files. A regular check catches anything that has changed.

Where It Goes Next

Make one project for your own business this week, with three real files and three rules. The next class in Claudia's Classroom covers handing Claude a longer job and checking the result when it's done.

Claude is a product of Anthropic. This class is not made by or affiliated with Anthropic.
